Lake Wohlford
Lake Wohlford is located high in the hills of Escondido and Valley Center. Origonally this place was called Bear Valley Reservoir back in 1895. The reservoir was built so that the farmers and residents of Escondido and Valley center had a reliable water source. Sadly enough to say this reservoir was built poorly and things started to go wrong from the start. Four days after the initial start up operation of the dam, the main flume started to leak water. Approximatly half of what it was supposed to deliver. Temporary fixes were put in place and solved the problems that needed to be corrected. In 1904 a fire destroyed most of the wooden flume causing the two cities to redesign and build a new flume. In 1910 both cities came togerther to initiate a plan for retrofitting the flume and other major high ares of the reservoir. This project took a little more than two years to finish and by 1912 Bear Valley Reservoir was complete and running smoothly. When designer and well liked board member Alvin W. Wohlford past away in 1924, it was voted that the name Bear Valley Reservoir would be changed to Lake Wohlford in honor of him.
At Lake Wohlford you will find Rainbow Trout, Channel Catfish, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Black Crappie. Thier is plenty of bass swimming around the submerged rock piles forming along the shoreline. There are hugh catfish hanging out by the rocky drop-offs and crappies congegating around the bushy areas of the lake. It's not uncommon to cach a 7 pound bass or a 15 lbs. catfish. You will also find trout weighing in at 5 pounds and 2.5 lb crappie. Trout fishing has been excellent the last couple of years.
Just try Boat Dock Cove or along the banks of Senior Shoreline. This is where the other anglers have been catching the big ones!
